When choosing LVP, one important decision is the installation method: click-lock floating flooring or glue-down flooring. Each has advantages and tradeoffs depending on the space, subfloor, traffic level and product.

What Is Click-Lock LVP?

Click-lock LVP uses an interlocking edge system that allows the planks to connect together and float over the subfloor rather than being permanently adhered to it. This system is commonly used in residential applications.

Advantages of Click-Lock LVP

• Faster installation – No adhesive cure time is required.
• Comfort underfoot – Many products include an attached pad, and some installations use an approved underlayment.
• Thicker construction – Click-lock products are often thicker than glue-down products.

Considerations with Click-Lock LVP

• Subfloor flatness still matters – Floating floors can tolerate only the amount of variation allowed by the manufacturer. Excessive high or low spots can place stress on locking joints and cause movement or damage.
• Individual plank repair can be more involved – Depending on the floor layout and locking system, surrounding planks may need to be removed to reach a damaged board.
• Movement must be accommodated – Floating floors require appropriate expansion space and installation practices.
• Heavy fixed objects and rolling loads require care – Product and manufacturer requirements should always be followed.

What Is Glue-Down LVP?

Glue-down LVP is installed by applying approved flooring adhesive to the prepared subfloor and setting the planks directly into the adhesive. This creates a more directly bonded flooring system.

Advantages of Glue-Down LVP

• Stable feel underfoot – The planks are bonded directly to the substrate.
• Good choice for high-traffic applications – Frequently used in commercial and demanding residential environments.
• Thinner profile – Helpful where floor height or transitions are important.
• Individual plank replacement can be easier – A damaged plank can often be removed and replaced without disassembling large portions of the floor.
• Well suited to large areas – Depending on the product and installation requirements.

Considerations with Glue-Down LVP

• Requires adhesive – Installation involves the use of flooring adhesive approved for the product and substrate.
• Subfloor preparation is important – Irregularities can telegraph through thinner glue-down products.
• Installation may take longer – Depending on adhesive requirements and working time.
• Removal can be more labor intensive – Adhesive residue and substrate preparation may be required during replacement.

Water and moisture performance depend on the specific flooring product, seams, substrate, adhesive and installation system, not on the installation method alone.

Choosing Between Click-Lock and Glue-Down LVP

Neither installation method is automatically best for every project.

Click-lock LVP can be a strong residential choice when a floating floor is appropriate, especially when the customer wants a thicker product or attached pad.

Glue-down LVP can be an excellent choice when stability, individual plank repair, floor-height control or heavy traffic are priorities.
